Producing & refining your imagery

Well done for some excellent character design
& photography work today :)

Once you have photographed the scenes of your storyboard you can add further comic book styling to your images if you want to using the Vinci or Photoshop filters on the Ipads.

To do this, sign in to your drive, save your images to the camera roll then open up the either of these apps and try applying different filters. When you find one that suits your theme and target audience you can then apply this to all your imagery.

Using apps is a design choice so thin carefully about it, can hep to further blend the 3D character with the printed background... below are some examples of your images treated with different Vinci filters

Left: "hellgun" / Right: "blood"

Left: "transverse" / Right "times"

Left: "mars" / Right: "Vendetta"

Unit 55 Graphic Narrative - Week 4

You have two weeks remaining to complete your first assignment.(A 'Creative Treatment' pitching your graphic narrative idea).

Your focus this week should be to complete at least one character design AND to produce imagery which gives a taste of the visual style that you will be aiming for.

What you should have ready by the end if this week:
  • At least 1 image showing your character in a suitable location (green screen / printed background)
  • At least 1 example of this imagery with any filters or style treatments applied.
  • Examples of fonts or other graphic items that form part of your intended style.
Monday PM: Session Targets

LO1: Be able to finalise an original character design.
LO2: Be able to source suitable background imagery using online resources.

TECH TIP :PRINTED BACKGROUNDS:

If you are planning to print a background to photograph your character in front of (e.g because you want to use atmospheric lighting) the source file that you use should be as large as possible. You can use the google search tools to make sure you are only looking at large images. See example below. Click on an image to check the pixels dimensions to see which image is largest (e.g 2560x1600 on the bottom example) This example should scale up to A2 without becoming too blurry.

Once you have chosen an image (or images) put them in a folder on your G-drive and also email / share them to your tutor for printing. If you send them today we will try and print them for you to use tomorrow.

Unit 33 Stop Motion Animation: Making a structured character body.

This session you will produce a structured body to support the character head used in your lip sync work last week. This body is built around an 'armature' - a wire frame which is constructed to be able to both stand and bend in the right places.

See guide slides via this link for the session tasks and step by step guide to making the model.

Unit 33 Session 3: Lip Sync part 1.

This session you'll start by making some notes about your initial experiments with Stop Motion techniques. Then, you'll move on to create resources for your own 'lip synced' character animation. Lip sync is a challenging technique to learn, but it will give your character animations a professional edge.

Learning objectives for this session:

LO1: Be able to describe & discuss stop motion processes.

LO2: Be able to produce resources for a ‘lip synced’ stop motion animation of a character.

Character Types: Star Wars example

(Source used: http://www.starwars.com/databank)

Protagonists: Luke Skywalker,  Princess Leia Organa

Luke Skywalker was a Tatooine farm boy who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known. Along with his friends Princess Leia and Han Solo, Luke battled the evil Empire, discovered the truth of his parentage, and ended the tyranny of the Sith.

Princess Leia Organa was one of the Rebel Alliance’s greatest leaders, fearless on the battlefield and dedicated to ending the tyranny of the Empire. Daughter of Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, sister of Luke Skywalker, and with a soft spot for scoundrels, Leia ranks among the galaxy’s great heroes. But life under the New Republic has not been easy for Leia.

Anti Hero
Smuggler. Scoundrel. Hero. Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon, was one of the great leaders of the Rebel Alliance. He and his co-pilot Chewbacca came to believe in the cause of galactic freedom, joining Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa in the fight against the Empire.

Antagonist: Darth Vader
Once a heroic Jedi Knight, Darth Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force, became a Sith Lord, and led the Empire’s eradication of the Jedi Order. He remained in service of the Emperor -- the evil Darth Sidious -- for decades, enforcing his Master’s will and seeking to crush the fledgling Rebel Alliance.

Flat Character:

C-3PO is a droid programmed for etiquette and protocol, built by the heroic Jedi Anakin Skywalker, and a constant companion to astromech R2-D2.  He is the stereotype of a bureaucrat, we know that he will always be worried and anxious, he is predictable. In some ways he is almost a dull parental figure to create contrast with the other crew members and make them seem more dynamic.

Round Characters:

Luke, Leia, Hans and Darth are all round characters because there characters all face internal conflicts, they sometimes act in ways that surprise us and we are given a good deal of information on their back stories, fears, desires, motivations etc
